The aknowledgement of sacrificial offering as a means to clearing the path to success and wellness in life, love, health, career and wealth, is ingrained into our social DNA from the moment our cognitive senses come to practice.
Whether through religion and traditions, culture norms and social etiquette, or through the many societal values which systematically espouse us into adulthood; We are made to believe that our evolution is dependent on gods unknown and ancestory which envelopes us as gaurdian angels – and they must be fed through ritual.
With this collection, Quiteria have come full circle in defining his own truth as a creative at an intersection between soldiering on with his vision, or conforming to popular rhetoric, for quick wins. This is when the adage of sacrifice come towering into my soul and wouldnt let go until he was ready to interrogate his challenges against his journey, and was ready to give an honest account, and at times had to offer an apology to himself.
For he have learnt that the only power he need to succeed is within himself; he is the one he have been waiting for, and that his Africaness is not defined by rituals and patterns in design, but rather by a centredness to command energy to the earth beneath as a force that is constantly reinventing, feeds of the richness of the tapestry of our land, and advocates for imagination as the collective nexus of every person in finding their own path to success.
In digging deep, he have learnt that sacrifice is nuanced and manifests in many ways. In choosing light or darkness, in finding joy through pain, and in dimming your own light to share the spotlight. This is all very noble, but the white elephant in the room was always going to be, ‘is this what defines him and the truth of his art’? What of his pride as an African? Is his work an extension of his lived experience.
He needn’t have bothered! The answer lay before him all along: his aesthetic is luxury because he is luxury. He is a child of a continent whose very DNA is a wealth of minerals which nations forge wars to exploit. Beauty is his truth. “I see it everywhere, in every living thing, and through the challenges and the triumphs. It is this marriage that has culminated in this collection, which is a dedicated sacrifice to self” says Quiteria.
